Kerala Murals, Tholu Puppets, Tanjore and Mysore Paintings

The Southern region of India comprises the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The region boasts of a rich and varied cultural heritage. The region is flanked by the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal and was once the cradle of the Dravidian civilization. Natsy by Design showcases folk paintings from this region.

Our collection includes Kerala mural paintings. These frescos once adorned the walls of palaces and ancient temples in Kerala. They depict mythology and legends and date by to the period between the 9th and 12th centuries. Natural pigments and vegetable colours characterized this traditional mural art form which is now being revived by artists at the Sree Sankara Sanskrit College in Kalady and the mural art school associated with the Guruvayoor temple. We also showcase folk paintings from the Chettinad region in Tamil Nadu depicting the simple pastoral life.
