Handcrafted Kalamkari bound notepads

Size: Length - 9.2 inches, Breadth - 6.2 inches

The history of cloth binding goes back a couple of centuries. In the late 19th century, publishers had taken control over the entire book making process. They soon began to see the cover as an integral part of the book. Cover designs could reflect the content, set the tone for the reader or attract the consumer. Cloth bindings were not readily accepted at first, but by the end of the century, they were the norm.

Kalamkari (Kalam-pen, kari-work) is basically art work done on cloth using a pen. Vegetable dyes are used to colour the designs applied on cloth. The art of painting using organic dyes on cloth was popular in several parts of India. The Kalamkari tradition originally consisted of scenes from Hindu mythology but changes in political systems influenced the patterns. During the Mughal period, Kalamkari was influenced by Persian motifs and designs. During the British rule, floral designs became popular, like the one pictured here.

Match these notepads with Kalamkari pens featured on Natsybydesign to make an ideal gift for friends and family.
