Phad Painting - Sanjukta and Prithviraj. Rectangle 20" x 14".

Phad painting, a form of folk painting that originated in the princely state of Shahpura, is typically done on a scroll or phad in a panel format. The narratives of the folk deities of Rajasthan are depicted on them or legends of erstwhile local rulers.

The story of the heroic romance between Prithviraj and Sanjukta comes from medieval times. King Prithviraj Chauhan had subdued many kingdoms and was known for his valour and charm. Sanjukta was a princess, daughter of Raja Jaichand, and she had fallen in love with the charms of Prithviraj. Sanjukta was known for her headstrong nature as well as her ravishing beauty which captured King Prithviraj. Against insurmountable odds, as they belonged to rival Rajput clans, Prithviraj whisked Sanjukta away on his horse and took her to Delhi where she became the third queen of King Prithviraj.
