The Nayanmars were a group 63 saint poets in Tamil Nadu between the 6th and 8th century
who were considered the supreme devotees of Shiva. Even in misfortune, they never gave up
hope and worshipped Lord Shiva with sincerity and devotion. Shiva, overwhelmed by their bhakti
wanted to show the world how great his desciples are. So he played out 64 different acts
to expose the great sacrifice done by these Nayanmars. They along with Alvars, influenced the Bhakti movement.
In the 10th century, King Raja Raja Chola heard excerpts from Tevaram literature which describes the lives
of the saints in detail, and commissioned his priest Nambiyandar to compile the hymns of these 63 saint poets
into a series of volumes called the Tirumurai. These prints are more than 100 years old.
