These masks are made by an old man, the sole surviving artisan in the Chhattisgarh area.
The history of masks in tribal culture is obscure. Some believe masks were first used by witches to conceal their identity while performing magical spells, while others believe masks were used by migrating people during pre-historic times. Whatever its origins, masks have always been a popular prop in tribal culture and an important feature in its deeply religious society. Tribal priests would wear masks and perform various magical rituals. The characteristics of the carving and material used differs depending the region of origin. Masks of rakshasas are also used to ward of evil and bring good luck to people.
